Born from a sleepless night and a lot of love
The Story Begins started the way most good things do — with a new baby, an overwhelming feeling, and a question: how do we hold onto this moment forever?
How it started
When my daughter arrived in the early hours of a November morning, I sat in the hospital chair beside her bassinet and felt something I couldn't quite name. Not just love — though there was plenty of that. It was the weight of the moment. The feeling that this was the beginning of something enormous, and that I desperately wanted to remember every detail of it.
I'm a writer by trade. I've written for magazines, agencies, brands. But sitting there at 3am, I couldn't find the words. The standard birth announcement felt hollow. A photo album felt incomplete. I wanted something that told the whole story — her name, her weight, the way the room smelled like antiseptic and flowers, the look on my partner's face when she first opened her eyes.
So I wrote it. A little story, just for her. And when I read it aloud for the first time, my partner cried. My mother cried. I cried. And I thought: every family deserves this.
Every baby arrives with a story already in progress. Our job is to write it down before the details fade.
What we believe
Details matter
The weight. The time. The city. The siblings who pressed their noses to the glass. These are the details that make a story real — and they're the ones that slip away fastest.
Craft over convenience
Every book is written by hand, not generated by algorithm. We read your answers carefully and write something that sounds like it was made for your family — because it was.
Heirlooms, not novelties
We print on thick, durable pages with premium binding because this book should survive a childhood. It should be read a hundred times, dog-eared and loved.
One family at a time
We're a small studio, not a factory. Every order gets our full attention. We'd rather do fewer books beautifully than many books quickly.
I started this because I wanted something that didn't exist yet. I'm still a little amazed that it does now.

James is a writer, new dad, and the person who reads every single order form before a word is written. He lives in Toronto with his partner, their daughter Ellie, and a very opinionated cat named Fig.
